STEMCELL TRANSPLANTATION
A bone marrow transplant, also called a stem cell transplant, is a treatment for some types of cancer. For example, you might have one if you have leukemia, multiple myeloma, or some types of lymphoma. Doctors also treat some blood diseases with stem cell transplants. In the past, a stem cell transplant was more commonly called a bone marrow transplant because the stem cells were collected from the bone marrow. Today, stem cells are usually collected from the blood, instead of the bone marrow. For this reason, they are now often called stem cell transplants. We perform autologous and Allogeneic Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplants in our Bone Marrow Unit at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre.
OUTPATIENT TREATMENT FACILITIES
Your prescribed medications (intravenous treatments e.g. chemotherapy, iron therapy, blood products and immunotherapy) will be administered at a SAOC accredited outpatients treatment facility by experienced, caring nurses. They will guide you through what may be a new and stressful process. We encourage you to bring anything that will make you more comfortable. Family and friends are a very important part of your experience with us, and we recognize their valuable support. We welcome your family and friends. In order to accommodate all our patients, we ask that you limit your support system while receiving treatment in the facility to only one.
PHARMACY
Your chemotherapy will be ordered through DisChem. They have a mixing facility in our rooms.
